History
In May 1990 the Ōtorohanga District resolved to proceed with a new Community Centre on the Town Hall site in Maniapoto Street, where the library and the Village Green now sit. In June 1990 the Ōtorohanga Community Trust was formed and Trustees J Miller (Chairman), D Bailey, T Brittain, Mrs B Corboy, J Earwaker, A Miller, M Pevreal, C Prescott, G Sanders, G Wilshier, & C Wilkins were appointed. The plans were for a building to be called the ‘Ōtorohanga District Community Centre.’
When this project did not proceed, the funds were offered back to those who had donated them, or they would be held for the benefit of Ōtorohanga. The Ōtorohanga District & Community Charitable Trust Inc. was formed in April 2000, and received the funds that were not required to be returned.
The first trustees appointed to this new Trust were Rex Byles - Chairperson, Peter Burton, Robert Walters, Peter Kerr-Bell, Sue Blackler, Robyn Lewis and Brian Tappenden. They received

District History
Ōtorohanga District is part of the King Country region, known by Maori as 'Te Rohe Potae' - "The Area of the Hat."
The King Country extends along the west coast of New Zealand's North Island from Mount Pirongia in the north to the coastal town of Mokau in the south and stretches inland to Pureora Forest Park and the Waikato River.
- Early 1860s - After the Maori Land Wars, the Maori Chief Tawhiao and his followers sought refuge in the rugged countryside of the King Country.
- From 1864 to 1883 - The area was closed off to Europeans except by express permission of Maori.
- Late 19th Century - Development of the King Country area, which was covered by dense native bush and swamps, commenced.
- 1922 - The Ōtorohanga County was formed, which was the predecessor to the current Council.
- 1956 - The Ōtorohanga County was joined with the northern half of the neighbouring Kāwhia County.
